Facilities

Bayswater is located at the southern end of the Mountain Highway level crossing, and between Station Street and the United Group Rail train maintenance facility, with station access from Station Street.

The station consists of two platforms, in an island format, with a large fibro building in the centre. The building houses an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located inside the waiting room, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins, with additional coin-only Metcard and myki ticket vending machines also located inside the waiting area. An underpass is located at the Belgrave end of the station.

History

Bayswater station opened on 4 December 1889.[1] The current island platform opened in 1982, as part of the duplication of the line between Bayswater and Ringwood stations.[2] It was once the destination of goods trains conveying cement, the last train running on 24 June 1987 when the traffic was relocated to Lyndhurst station, near Dandenong.[3] Bayswater was upgraded to a Premium Station in 2001.

The train maintenance and stabling facilities opened in 1998 and was completed by 1999, and replaced the facilities at Jolimont Yard. The buildings were approximately 2,850 m² in size, and permit bogie repair and replacement, under carriage and overhead work. The facility cost $15 million, which also included the Westall facility.[4]
